Naalala ko noon, The Eraserheads was my first taste of puberty. I was 11 years old when I first heard about them and their music from my older cousins, who were high school seniors then. Toyang and the whole Ultraelectromagneticpop! album was a relief for the never-ending Lambada addiction of my mother. LOL. Filipino music is very much dominated by foreign artist and other cheesy pop songs that comes with dance routines. The band hailed as the Pinoy version of The Beatles broke the monotony and created a craze that made legions of followers appreciate other local artist. The Eraserheads was also the first band that I saw play live. For only 50 pesos, I saw them and first-gen Rivermaya back-to-back in an afternoon concert at the 5 and Up Club launch in 1997. I remember being terrified at first because of the overwhelming adoration they got from fans while they play. Who would have thought that songs about college life and the roller coaster ride that comes with it would influence a whole generation of music fans? The band gave a sense of belongingness to everyone who felt lost back then. Feeling k0, I was a part of this barkada because I enjoyed their music as much as my cousins did. Both of them are married now and cannot be at the concert tonight; but the news that Ely, Marcus, Buddy and Raimund reuniting again made them all giggly and made them remember those fun times during high school.
Bands are sprouting here and there within the past couple of years. And all of these bands have something in common: The Eraserheads. They were influenced by the band in more ways than one. I had a chat with Ean of Up Dharma Down a couple of hours ago at Route196 about tonight's event. He said that bars all over the Metro will be closed because all bar owners and bands, including his, will be at the concert. It will aslo be some sort of a reunion for me because I will be meeting and hoping to see familiar faces later.
A lot have been written about the 45-minute concert and it's mala-teledrama production journey all over the Blogosphere. Disappointments, anticipation and frustrations ends tonight as this long-time dream come to reality.
It's nice to feel like an eleven-year-old again.
