Yesterday, one of our big bosses, Ms. Mimi, sent an e-mail offering a pair of tickets to Avenue Q, a theatre play currently being shown at the RCBC Plaza. The place was four blocks away from the office so I thought a lot of my officemates would be eager to reply to the e-mal. An hour or two passed and nobody from the office responded to the offer. I won’t elaborate what happened but I was the one who ended up with the tickets. When I got them, it says LODGE. Ms. Mimi quipped when I passed by her office,
If nobody gets the tickets, I would just throw them away.
I didn’t bother asking why she was giving it away. Maybe something came up that night that she cancelled her plans. Or maybe not.
My friend Ina was the one who quickly responded to my “Send to All” SMS and joined me at this impromptu event. I am not entirely sure, but I think she took Theatre as her major back in college (Yes, she will kill me because I am not sure about this…enough of the Atom talk and random eye cream for dark circles banter next time, bwahaha). We decided to meet at the coffee shop where the RCBC Plaza is right across the street. Oh, I forgot to mention that it had been two years the last time I saw Ina at the Eraserheads: The Reunion concert.
We were outside the theatre for Avenue Q around 7:30PM. We bumped into her friend Leng. I was surprised that her friend was actually former Ang TV star, Paula Peralejo. Leng introduced her boyfriend Charlie who was her date.
The great thing about theatre plays is that they start the show on time. As in the show started at 8PM on the dot. The theatre had three levels. Ina’s friend Leng and company had Orchestra seats, which was level with the stage; while our seats was on the second level.
Ina asked me if I was able to do a research about the show. I said no so she shared what she was able to review online. She said the play is an adult-themed semi-puppet show. Topics from sex and sexuality, religion, racism among others are the ones highlighted by the play. She remembered her two friends whom she called “Avenue Q addicts” because they know all the words to the songs from the play.
The show started. I cannot remember how many times we applauded and laughed really hard. We were surprised how great Aiza Seguerra and Rachel Alejandro were as actresses. But Frenchie Dy was definitely the show’s star.
Friday night was fun.
