Day 031 of 365: Original

No comments:

Day 031 of 365

I skipped work today because I am still running a fever. But it was not as worst as yesterday. But my mother insisted that I stay home for another day and sleep and rest more. Earlier this afternoon, I decided to get out of bed, write a bit and watch a movie that has been on my hard drive for months.

Let The Right One In is the original version of the 2010 movie, Let Me In. At the start of this year, I promised myself I will watch as much movies as I can. I do not know if I can do that hand-in-hand with ‘reading as much books as I can’. But it is a plan. Reviews for each of the movies might be a cool thing to do too.

So the movie is not your typical vampire film. It’s a French Swedish film. It’s brutal, but not morbid. It was scary, but not horrifying. It was a love story, but not really…

Day 030 of 365: Male

Fever day number two.

My parents are now a bit worried because I have been sick for the past two days despite of the water therapy and eating dalandan. So my father drove me to Manila East Medical Center to have me checked. It’s a Sunday, the clinics are closed so we went straight to the Emergency room.

The doctor who met with us seemed pre-occupied with her iPhone that she’s checking out her Facebook profile while checking me. I was a bit alarmed. She asked one of her assistants to refer me to one of the medical technicians to have my blood checked.

My tests were alright, thank God. Platelet counts are normal (my parent’s thought I might have dengue). The fever’s caused by the cold weather and too much phlegm. It was indeed right for me to feel a bit alarmed because look at what that iPhone-loving doctor wrote as my gender on her prescription.

Day 029 of 365

Been feeling a little under the weather since the whole day yesterday. I was feeling great when I left home but then I started feeling shitty during the course of the day. Started coughing by afternoon and had fever when I got home earlier. I am guessing I got this when I rode the bus going to the office. Good thing I have some meds. I took paracetamol last night to help me sleep. But I still have fever when I woke up this morning :(

I hate being sick.

Don’t Date Girls Who Reads

2 comments:
Twitter is sometimes a great way to find good stories and write-ups from people around the world. The 140-character messaging platform isn’t always some senseless thing that people do all day. A number of the people I follow on Twitter shared this link about an essay entitled You Should Date an Illiterate Girl by Charles Wranke. The title caught my attention and I clicked the link. Been reading and re-reading it in between tasks the whole day and thought of sharing my thoughts about it. Here’s the essay. My two cents after this <blockquote>.

You Should Date An Illiterate Girl
by Charles Wranke (19 January 2011)

Date a girl who doesn’t read. Find her in the weary squalor of a Midwestern bar. Find her in the smoke, drunken sweat, and varicolored light of an upscale nightclub. Wherever you find her, find her smiling. Make sure that it lingers when the people that are talking to her look away. Engage her with unsentimental trivialities. Use pick-up lines and laugh inwardly. Take her outside when the night overstays its welcome. Ignore the palpable weight of fatigue. Kiss her in the rain under the weak glow of a streetlamp because you’ve seen it in film. Remark at its lack of significance. Take her to your apartment. Dispatch with making love. Fuck her.

Let the anxious contract you’ve unwittingly written evolve slowly and uncomfortably into a relationship. Find shared interests and common ground like sushi, and folk music. Build an impenetrable bastion upon that ground. Make it sacred. Retreat into it every time the air gets stale, or the evenings get long. Talk about nothing of significance. Do little thinking. Let the months pass unnoticed. Ask her to move in. Let her decorate. Get into fights about inconsequential things like how the fucking shower curtain needs to be closed so that it doesn’t fucking collect mold. Let a year pass unnoticed. Begin to notice.

Figure that you should probably get married because you will have wasted a lot of time otherwise. Take her to dinner on the forty-fifth floor at a restaurant far beyond your means. Make sure there is a beautiful view of the city. Sheepishly ask a waiter to bring her a glass of champagne with a modest ring in it. When she notices, propose to her with all of the enthusiasm and sincerity you can muster. Do not be overly concerned if you feel your heart leap through a pane of sheet glass. For that matter, do not be overly concerned if you cannot feel it at all. If there is applause, let it stagnate. If she cries, smile as if you’ve never been happier. If she doesn’t, smile all the same.

Let the years pass unnoticed. Get a career, not a job. Buy a house. Have two striking children. Try to raise them well. Fail, frequently. Lapse into a bored indifference. Lapse into an indifferent sadness. Have a mid-life crisis. Grow old. Wonder at your lack of achievement. Feel sometimes contented, but mostly vacant and ethereal. Feel, during walks, as if you might never return, or as if you might blow away on the wind. Contract a terminal illness. Die, but only after you observe that the girl who didn’t read never made your heart oscillate with any significant passion, that no one will write the story of your lives, and that she will die, too, with only a mild and tempered regret that nothing ever came of her capacity to love.

Do those things, god damnit, because nothing sucks worse than a girl who reads. Do it, I say, because a life in purgatory is better than a life in hell. Do it, because a girl who reads possesses a vocabulary that can describe that amorphous discontent as a life unfulfilled—a vocabulary that parses the innate beauty of the world and makes it an accessible necessity instead of an alien wonder. A girl who reads lays claim to a vocabulary that distinguishes between the specious and soulless rhetoric of someone who cannot love her, and the inarticulate desperation of someone who loves her too much. A vocabulary, god damnit, that makes my vacuous sophistry a cheap trick.

Do it, because a girl who reads understands syntax. Literature has taught her that moments of tenderness come in sporadic but knowable intervals. A girl who reads knows that life is not planar; she knows, and rightly demands, that the ebb comes along with the flow of disappointment. A girl who has read up on her syntax senses the irregular pauses—the hesitation of breath—endemic to a lie. A girl who reads perceives the difference between a parenthetical moment of anger and the entrenched habits of someone whose bitter cynicism will run on, run on well past any point of reason, or purpose, run on far after she has packed a suitcase and said a reluctant goodbye and she has decided that I am an ellipsis and not a period and run on and run on. Syntax that knows the rhythm and cadence of a life well lived.

Date a girl who doesn’t read because the girl who reads knows the importance of plot. She can trace out the demarcations of a prologue and the sharp ridges of a climax. She feels them in her skin. The girl who reads will be patient with an intermission and expedite a denouement. But of all things, the girl who reads knows most the ineluctable significance of an end. She is comfortable with them. She has bid farewell to a thousand heroes with only a twinge of sadness.

Don’t date a girl who reads because girls who read are the storytellers. You with the Joyce, you with the Nabokov, you with the Woolf. You there in the library, on the platform of the metro, you in the corner of the cafĂ©, you in the window of your room. You, who make my life so god damned difficult. The girl who reads has spun out the account of her life and it is bursting with meaning. She insists that her narratives are rich, her supporting cast colorful, and her typeface bold. You, the girl who reads, make me want to be everything that I am not. But I am weak and I will fail you, because you have dreamed, properly, of someone who is better than I am. You will not accept the life that I told of at the beginning of this piece. You will accept nothing less than passion, and perfection, and a life worthy of being storied. So out with you, girl who reads. Take the next southbound train and take your Hemingway with you. I hate you. I really, really, really hate you.

I feel for this guy. His words, specially in the last sentence are like rocks being thrown. He is right about girls, well people who reads a lot IMHO, has sort of a mindset when it comes to things and people and the world they live in. Knowing a lot of things makes a person have high standards about everything, which is not a bad thing. But sometimes it hinders them to appreciate the little things. Things that are menial. Things that are trivial. Things that MOST people around them appreciate and know.

They have no idea (or maybe they do but they just don’t care) that sometimes being like that seems RUDE to most people.

Day 027 of 365: Royce

Day 027 of 365

Royce chocolates should send me a box of their yummy chocolates for this post, haha! Kidding :P

Gene, Olive, Sandy and I made a deal last week that we will buy Royce chocolates this week. It’s a payday week so no worries on splurging on the one thing we four had in common. So we headed to Greenbelt and bought one bar of Dark Chocolate and one bar of Milk Chocolate with Almonds.

I just hope the girl from that branch of Royce was a bit nicer. She kept on giving us this stare that really irked me. As if she first made sure that we’re really going to buy from them before even entertaining us and offering us a free taste of their product. And she wasn’t smiling the whole time! I know it’s already late in the afternoon, but the least one could do is smile to a potential customer.

Day 026 of 365: Planner

No comments:

Day 026 of 365

Today, I finally figured out how am I going put this planner into good use. It’s a Starbucks planner from my brother. He gave it to me last Christmas. I am not really a ‘planner’ kind of person. Yes, I look bad right now because I said that, haha. But seriously, I normally would just write things on my notebook and tag the entries with dates. It gets confusing at times.

The start of this year is both an overwhelming and sad. One of our team mates, actually our former team leader, got promoted (yeey!) and is now heading a different team :( I already miss him our team meetings but this organization movement is all for the best.

I am starting to feel the ‘weight’ of the tasks that our team has this first three weeks. The four of us are still adjusting to it, or maybe they have all adjusted and I still need to keep up. I need to up my game and focus more. And getting used to writing on this planner is the first step. Wish me luck?

Day 025 of 365: Exit

No comments:

Day 025 of 265The travel going home wasn’t as bad as I thought it would. A part of EDSA was closed because of the bombing that happened earlier today. It was almost 6pm when I left the office. I’ve already anticipated an extra volume of people going to the Ayala MRT Station because no buses will be able to pass by along Buendia. And who will ride a bus after hearing the news, right? I passed by Glorietta and snapped a photo of the ushers stationed at the different corners of the mall. They’re all dress in mime costumes. And they’re all in character too! Using their gestures and facial expressions to lead people to the right path going to the MRT Station. I am impressed.

Day 024 of 365

Nobody noticed I cried today. It’s because of this post my friend Macky posted on his blog. I do not know what came over him to create the entry, but I was really touched with the three-paragraphed post he had written.

Macky is my biking buddy. We’ve known each other since we were five, but we only became friends just recently.

I cannot thank you enough, Macky. I am lucky to be one of your chosen few.

Day 023 of 365

Dear Junior,

You have been with the family for almost four years. Four. And you still do not listen. How many times do we have to tell you not to sleep on the couch, especially Mama’s favorite spot.

Sometimes, Papa would say our lives will be better without you. But you have been very dear to us because you are Mommy Brush’s only offspring. We love your mom that much that we can deal with your shortcomings.

We still believe you’ll come around.

Day 022 of 365: Humid

No comments:
Day 022 of 365
Today was humid. My mother had been complaining the whole day. She and my father had a hard time sleeping the rest of the morning because of it. Both needed sleep because Mama had her Dialysis session the night before. The twice-a-week session is between 11pm to 3am in Quezon City (a 2-hour drive from our place).

Come afternoon, I noticed that it was starting to get windy so I asked my mother if she wanted to walk with me outside to get some fresh air. She got tired after 10 minutes of walking our front yard and asked if I can just put a chair in front of our terrace.
My parents enjoyed the rest of the afternoon sitting at our front yard eating dalandan, exchanging stories and sweet nothings like they’re still in high school. :)

Day 021 of 365: Gecko

No comments:

Day 021 of 365

I dropped by the newly-opened Migs restaurant in Taytay to see Ivan and Nunong’s band play today. I forgot to ask if their band is still called Gecko, heee. Ivan and Nunong were former colleagues when I was still a writer for the Rizal’s provincial news paper, Manila East Watch (MEW).  The last time I saw them was some six years ago at our last days at the MEW office.

The time I’ve spent with the MEW team didn’t feel work at all. I remember we always had this weekend drive to wherever we feel like going. From as far as Quezon to the nearby towns to eat and take pictures for the yearbook project and the paper.

Day 020 of 365

The moon. One of those things others sometimes fail to appreciate.

I asked my father this morning to stop so I could take a picture. This photo would’ve been better if we stopped right where it overlooks Laguna de Bai but I think we were talking about something important when we passed that point of our trip to the FX terminal. These morning trips with my father is a favorite part of my day.

They say people get a bit wacko during full moon.

Day 019 of 365: Twisted

No comments:

Day 019 of 365I wish McDonalds make Twister Fries as part of their regular menu. A lot will definitely agree that there is something unexplainable about how GOOD and YUMMY they are.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy it at the McDo in Landmark food court today. The rest of the stores around Makati are starting to pull this out.

Just curious;  what are the months they issue Twister Fries?

Rehabs

No comments:
Checked my Inbox this morning and found that I have los angeles detox rehabs and four other topics to write due this coming weekend. Speaking of rehabs, I was reminded of a certain male celebrity who declared on national TV that he’ll be entering a rehab for alcoholics. His acting sincere was fairly believable that I was surprised that he sort of withdrew from the plan because of  some “complications”. Best actor, ‘eh?

Day 018 of 365: Bus

No comments:

Day 018 of 365

Bus rides. I take two daily. One in the morning (from Crossing to Ayala) and one in the other half of the day depending on what I log out from work. My favorite seat has got to be the elevated part at the back part of the bus. It’s the perfect place when the film that they’re showing on board are the scary, gory ones. I hate those! It’s also the seat away from the aisle, meaning less hassle of being bumped here and there by passengers.

One morning, I remember how thrilled I was when ‘Autumn in New York’ was the movie the bus was screening. I wish most of my bus rides are like that.

He Puffs

No comments:
Alone. A number of plans have been forming in his head. Devious plans that he'd been bottling up for months. The ideas have been evaporating like the smoke of gurkha cigars. One blink, the first was formed; he wants to live in an island. The farthest one could find. This might be one those plans that will never happen, but there is nothing wrong with hoping for something, no matter how insane the idea was.

Day 016 of 365

Will start reading Stories tonight. Read a couple of books by Neil Gaiman, but this one’s a bit different because aside from contributing a story, he’s also one of the editors. I got this book last Christmas from Kuya Rey. He was my ‘Daddy’ at our Christmas party kris kringle. I’ve been wanting to buy the book but I am still waiting for the paperback version so imagine my reaction when I opened his gift!  I asked if he could sign the book and here’s what it says:

I thank God because you know how to read :) I hope you enjoy this book; it’s theme, it’s stories; it’s lessons.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Supplements

2 comments:

It's the new year. Thank heavens I still do not need the best weight loss supplements out there. My weight is still sound but I believe I definitely need to start a work out routine of some sort. I need to go back to biking. I do not have my own bike yet, but if I’ll buy my own (soon, I hope), I want something like this:

Day 015 of 365

Decided to end my long day watching The Social Network. I’ve seen the film on the big screen but I am the type of person who would watch a film once or even thrice and end up having a different view about it. I was impressed by Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay the first time. But there were some things I need to look into again since we ( I was with a friend when I watch the film) weren’t in the best seats back then.

Day 014 0f 365

YAY! I finally got my laptop back! After a month, the tech guy sent me a text message earlier this week and said that my laptop is ready for pick up. The video card got busted. The tech guy (who was busy working on a gps system plan) explained that overheating might be the cause. The repair didn’t come cheap since it costs almost a quarter of my salary! I am not complaining though since I do most of my blog tasks and posters/graphics with my laptop.

The tech guy suggested I buy a cooling pad. And so I did…but I’ll share about it on another post.

Pretty Little Liars

No comments:

There are things that I still need to work on, like the online business degree article my cousin asked me write for her for their school paper, before I can finally sit down and watch the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars.

After a long hiatus, the gang is back with more juicy secrets to reveal. Fans were left on a cliffhanger with the previous episode wondering if Hannah will survive. The image is a bit of spoiler because it seems that the mysterious ‘A’ left them a message. And what a freaky way to leave it on Hannah’s cast! :s

Day 013 of 365

Something about this picture triggered a memory of a childhood best friend. How she was scared of crossing the road. The road led to the store where we would always had our afternoon snack. I still remember the look on her face when she decided to cross it with me. It was priceless.

Be Healthy

No comments:

That’s one of the things I want to keep this 2011. Not that I was always not feeling good in the previous year, it’s just I wanted to dedicate an extra amount of my time really thinking of what to eat, to go biking more often and read a lot of what food supplements I can take to help me stay in shape. Been hearing a lot about resveratrol recently on TV ads. Resveratrol is gaining popularity due to its many incredible health benefits. I wasn’t fully aware of it until recently when I saw a short segment about it on the local news. With word spreading quickly about these benefits, a lot of health buffs are now starting to use Resveratrol supplements for numerous health conditions. Did you know that resveratrol supplements (like p90x resistance bands) are made with the use of the Japanese Knotweed. These powerful ingredients normally occurs in plants when they are infected with fungus or bacterial diseases. Experts use the Knotweed plant to reproduce this condition for manufacturing of Resveratrol supplements. With much scientific research performed on Resveratrol benefits, the health experts continue to discover more reasons for individuals to add this supplement to their daily diet. When something comes from natural ingredients, nothing will definitely go wrong.

The amazing thing about resveratrol is its ability to reduce the risks of cancer. Preventing skin and colon cancer and appears to reduce the risks of gastric, esophageal and breast cancer are some of the powerful benefits of this supplement. Resveratrol also has the ability to improve the activity of the brain thus reducing the risks of neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. With all this information, I am sure you’re wondering where to buy resveratrol. Well you are lucky because all you have to do is to click all the links found within this post and you’ll get the information you want. :)

Day 012 of 365: Ninja

Day 12 of 365

Fruit Ninja on my brother’s iPod Touch = one the best $.99 cents I’ve ever spent. I first heard about the game from John Mayer (yes, we’re that close HEHE). The game has three modes: classic, zen and arcade. The rule is to release your inner ninja, slice all the fruits and watch out for bombs.

That simple.

Laptop Separation Anxiety

No comments:

Been having one for weeks now. My laptop crashed more than a month ago and I still haven’t heard from the tech guys where I brought it to be fixed. If only I have a budget to buy this gorgeous Sony VAIO, I would. Problem is, having a new laptop or a new gadget for that matter is the least of my priorities.

I do most of my blog tasks and graphics on my laptop because its processor is more powerful that what our desktop has. Hopefully I get some good feedback about it this weekend. They said it’ll only take two weeks, three weeks max, to determine if they can fix a laptop or not.

Day 11 0f 365

Greeted by a long queue yet again at the Greenfield District terminal. It wasn’t as worst as yesterday. This sign gives relief because it means the long wait is over.

Frustration sinks in every time I reach this point though. Will I be able to go home at last or will I still wait for another 15 minutes, 30…or another hour.

Commuting is fun.

Day 010 of 365: Terminal

No comments:

Day 010 of 365

Spent a freakin’ hour and a half at the FX terminal earlier this evening. And it’s only Monday. I was exhausted and starving after a long day and this is what I have to endure 3 out of 5 times I commute every week. :( I just wish I have a friend or someone to chat with while waiting. That way, it’ll be more bearable. Haha.

In other news, I joined the Minute Maid Philippines blog contest. A percentage of the points will depend on how many comments the blog post has. So please please comment on this post and help me win for my Mama :D

I just drank a bottle of Minute Maid Pulpy. They say it’s got ‘no preservatives added’. Aw, c’mon…It’s bottled juice. Is that even possible? So I thought maybe... that's why it's so yummy!

I didn’t believe it the first time I heard it’s got no preservatives added. So I read the ingredients (even the fine print) and everything checked out! It really has NO PRESERVATIVES ADDED! That means it doesn’t have ingredients that may turn out to be allergens, or worse...carcinogens! Whew! Now that’s healthy goodness that tastes so good, I... flipped! :)
Pulpy goodness! So okay, it’s got no preservatives added. That’s really good, right? Not just because it doesn’t have those icky, harmful ingredients, but it also means... it'll be perfect not only in quenching my thirst but also in helping me fight against sickness. :)

So far anyone who still has a hard time believing that Minute Maid has got no preservatives added - meaning it's THAT natural, it's almost like it's plucked straight from the tree, it's just as Mother Nature wanted your orange juice to be, it's got nothing but the good stuff yes, none of those potentially toxic stuff that can harm your brain, kidneys, heart; cause tumors aargh- the list of preservatives' bad effects just go on!!! Anyway, just to prove a point on just how good Minute Maid Pulpy is 'cause it's got NO PRESERVATIVES ADDED, I'm gonna recommend it to my Mama. She started her dialysis last year and has limits when it comes to what she eats and drinks! I am glad to know that Mama can freely enjoy the refreshing taste and healthy benefits of Minute Maid Pulpy.

Feels good to know about the real pulpy deal, right? C’mon show me a smile on the comment box, and you might win yourself a Really Pulpy Deal! (That’s a chance to win a Minute Maid gift pack simply by commenting. Sweet! C'mon you just might be picked as the lucky 'commentor'!)

Day 008 of 365
Fixing my room and arranging books and CDs took the whole day. I have one sack and five huge grocery bags of stuff (i.e old projects and documents from college, magazines I hardly read, old clothes and shoes, etc) that will be thrown away. Looking at these old stuff made me realize how much I hold on to things. There were items in the bunch that’s with me for 15 years! I sort of have some separation anxiety in some of the things that’ll be thrown away. But then I thought, holding on to things is not good, especially if some of them are keeping one from moving forward.

Day 07 of 365
I have been sleeping on our couch for two days now. No, I didn’t do anything silly :P My father painted the book shelf he made for me the other day and my whole room smells like kerosene. Sleeping on the couch, in my opinion, is both fun and frustrating. Fun because I can watch TV ‘till the wee hours of the morning (but didn’t do that this week since I have work. I might tonight, though hehe). Frustrating because I sort of got “wider” in the past year and I noticed it’s really hard to toss and turn compared to the previous times I spent the night and slept on our couch.

Hopefully I can get back to my room by Sunday. Tomorrow, I’ll be arranging my books and CDs in my new shelf. Yay! :)

Surprised to find this book shelf on my bedroom wall when I got home. Completely in awe, I do not know how many times I said thank you when I called him and Mama. She said he worked on it the whole day; turning my old cabinet into this perfect shelf and laptop table.

I cannot wait to put in all my books and CDs this weekend. :)

Day 005 of 365

Last night, I only had two hours of sleep. I’ve been in my bed around 9pm but couldn’t sleep. I didn’t drink coffee or Milo. I didn’t eat chocolates either. Must be the surprise gift from my father (that’ll be posting as my tomorrow’s entry once it’s done) and the adrenalin rush it caused.

Anyways, so I struggled keeping myself awake the whole day today at work. We started researching for a new project that we will be working on in the coming weeks. I was very sleepy that, instead of reading the related documents for the new project, I ended up staring at Yoda or the Panda on most parts of the day. :s

Day 004 of 465

It’ll be impossible for me to forget what day it is everyday this year. In my office desk, I have not one not two, but THREE 2011 calendars! One’s on the monitor, another was a feline-slash-tour-of- Europe-themed given by Olive as pasalubong from her trip and the third was a Tweet calendar (very clever because I love to tweet – follow me @belcerteza) from Ony and Karen :).

They’re not arranged as what is in the picture though.

Bear with me as I am only starting to get the hang of doing this on a daily basis. It’s only my fourth day and I am really having fun. I am not going to promise but I will try my very best to post something more entertaining haha! Me and my boring life wehehe :P

It’s great having something to look forward to do everyday.

Day 003 of 365

Well, almost…

I went to Henri Calayag salon after work to get a haircut. It was my first time to get a haircut there. I wanted to have it really short and I want it done professionally this time. I’ve had bad experiences with the salons from where I am from. There was one time I almost looked like a chicken even without hair gel. It’s straight, but it will sort of have a life of its own when not properly trimmed. I know it’s going to be pricey, but I want it done right this time. Oo, maarte ako at ang buhok ko :P

Ron, one of the stylists in Henri Calayag, was the one who entertained me. When he asked what I wanted to do with my hair. I said I wanted to have a pixie cut like Michelle Williams’ or Emma Watsons’. He tried his very best, but he concluded that this is the only length my hair could have. Shorter than this and I’ll be difficult to wear and style. Now my hair looks a bit like this.

Day 002 of 365: Hepburn

Mama had a very busy day.

I took this picture minutes ago while she’s entertaining her former students who came to visit her. Her students are still here enjoying themselves and singing their heart out in videoke. This morning, her friend’s sister came and chat with her for a while.  Then Tito Boni (my parents’ friend) also came by, had coffee and chatted with my mother for a bit. Tita Nining, my mother’s long-time friend who’s based in London, came home for the holidays and will be coming with the rest of her and my mother’s high school batch mates to cap off the day.

Look at that smile. I cannot stop staring at this picture. It makes my heart skip a beat.

Day 1 of 365: tsoknat

I opened his gift at exactly 12:05 AM today. He said he was reminded of that day when I sort of giggled when he gave me tsoknat (short for chocolate peanut, a local kind of candy here in the Philippines) that's why he bought me this pillow as Christmas present. It was his first time to visit me here at home. I appreciate his effort and he said he'll definitely come by again soon.

My 2011 was started with two firsts. I think this is going to be a great year. :D
